5 reasons to love Substack
It’s where all the cool kids are.. Learn more about the platform that’s providing an exciting creator economy for writers, it's also where you'll find my digital publication, North 🐊
A few months ago I joined Substack after an influencer I admire on Instagram started blogging again after a 12-year hiatus. It took me back to a time that was so dear to me, when I too would write blogs about my life and things that inspired me. Back then I was living on a remote island in Arnhem Land and blogging was both escapism and therapy, a dossier of my experiences and dreams.
Fast forward to 2024 and writers are moving to Substack. Not only is it a platform that makes publishing easy but it also provides a creator economy for writers which I think is brilliant. Not every writer is going to be a best selling author or snare that paid weekly column gig. The ability to potentially earn an income (big or small) from paid subscribers invested in your work is really exciting and opens up much more opportunity.
Here’s my top 5 reasons for loving Substack… I hope it helps you understand the platform better and starts you on a journey of reconnecting back to more authentic and community supported content.
You’ll feel smarter!
It’s a refreshing break from relentless death scrolling on socials. I feel like I learn something when I’m on Substack and I engage more meaningfully. Rather that socials where after hours of scrolling I rarely recall what I consumed (more like saw in a .2 second blip).
Substack provides a platform for writers and creators to help them earn a buck or two for their hard earned words.
I’m very passionate about this! As a creative you’re often investing a lot of time and knowledge to create work that people/brands want for free and that’s not always cool! We need to shift this concept.
If your local theatre company put on a play I believe most people would like to support their efforts by either paying for a ticket or donating to support more work. Writing is the same and Substack makes it easy to publish and easy to get paid for writing.
But don’t worry, not everything is paid content on Substack, there’s heaps of free stuff to enjoy, including on North. Our paid content gives dedicated subscribers more behind the scenes access than free subscribers.
No algorithms bullying creators to conform to the latest trends.
Instead creators are free to create, write and publish from a more authentic and organic space and that’s great for vibrant and individual work.
Helps writers build a community for authentic work and engagement.
Follow writers and have curated content sent directly to your email, or access via the Substack platform. Features like notes, recommendations and comments allow you to connect more with your followers and engage meaningfully.
My favourite… Substack rhymes with Love Shack! That song will now be stuck in your head, you’re welcome ;)
Now get out there and explore Substack, who knows what treasures you’ll uncover. Happy reading 🐊
